Well, as usual, a surprise from Dr. Wan again hehehe. Dr wan changed a little bit regarding our project. The new name is 'Thank A Microbe'. still a group work project, however, 'Adapt A Microbe' project now is an individual project!
Dr Wan showed us one of e-journal written by one of our students in our class. In he/she e-journal's, he/she include (and I searched for the images)
- Biggest bacteria : Thiomargarita namibiensis
- Bacillus anthracis : causes antharax
- Desulfovibrio vulgaris : sulfur eating bacteria
- Riftia pachyptila : live in hydrothermal vents
And we started a new topic. 'Brief History of Microbiology'.
The first microbiologist was Antonie van Leeuwenhoek who invented the first microscope. Robert Hooke then proposed a theory, "All living things are composed of cells". Antonie van Leeuwenhoek proposed spontaneous generation. John Needham gave an evidence to spontaneous generation, but Lazzaro Spallanzani dissapproved Needham's theory and the issue remain unsolved. Eventually, Rudolf Virchow proposed, "Living cells can arise only from preexisting living cells". It is then resolved by Louis Pasteur with Pasteur's experiment.
We also learn about Koch's Postulates. From what I understand, the steps are:
- Inject pathogen from disease
- Isolate the pathogen
- Culture in a medium to obtain pure culture
- Inject to a healthy person
- If same symptoms appear, it proves that particular pathogen cause the particular disease
After that, we started our second topic MICROSCOPIC. I get to know that there are light-field microscope, dark-field microscope, fluorescence and electron microscope( SEM &TEM)
Before we end our class, Dr Wan did a short quiz. The class was quiet tiring as it was 3 hours lecture and yes we were a bit surprised with the quiz and the changing of formats regarding our project. But still, the class was fun and I enjoyed it.
